YTL Power International Bhd (6742) has roped in several international firms to help spur the roll out of its multi-billion ringgit high-speed broadband (HSBB) initiative nationwide.

YTL, through subsidiary YTL Communications Sdn Bhd, teamed up with Cisco, Clearwire, GCT Semiconductor Inc and South Korea's Samsung to form a fourth generation (4G) innovation network in the country.

Representatives of the five companies sealed the pact during the MSC Malaysia's 12th International Advisory Panel (IAP) annual meeting in Putrajaya yesterday. It was witnessed by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

The innovation network will facilitate the development of applications and devices to support YTL's 4G service nationwide by the end of 2010, said YTL Communications chief executive officer Wing K. Lee.
To achieve this, the innovation network will be linked with Clearwire's innovation network in Silicon Valley in the US to enable free flow of ideas and information across borders.

"YTL's 4G innovation network will expand the 4G eco-system by linking Malaysia and other Asian developers directly with some of the world's most creative minds in Silicon Valley," Clearwire senior vice-president Ali Tabassi said in a statement.

Cisco Services chief globalisation officer Wim Elfrink said the network will be one of the first in the world to offer converged services over a wireless network.

"We expect that it will help drive competitiveness for Malaysia as we have consistently seen that those countries that use technology strategically are the countries that lead economically, socially and environmentally," Elfrink added.
