KUALA LUMPUR (WiMAX Day). YTL e-Solutions Berhad (YTLe), a subsidiary of YTL Corporation Berhad, announced today that it has entered into a strategic agreement with Xohm, the WiMAX business of Sprint Nextel, for assistance in the roll-out of YTLe WiMAX services in Malaysia.
In a press statement today, YTLe Executive Chairman and Managing Director Tan Sri Dato’ (Dr) Francis Yeoh Sock Ping said, “This collaboration with XOHM will facilitate YTLe’s plans to develop and deploy a WiMAX network in Malaysia. XOHM will provide the expertise and the experience it has gained from the rollout of its own US-based WiMAX operations in key areas including ecosystem strategy, infrastructure design and network deployment.”
This is the first reported consulting project for Xohm, which will effectively replicate its American WiMAX network in Malaysia, with significant positive externalities for the WiMAX industry. According to Atish Gude, Senior Vice-President of Mobile Broadband Operations at XOHM, the partnership with YTLe will drive “a stronger ecosystem, increasing economies of scale and strengthening global roaming opportunities.”
Tan Sri Francis said that working with Xohm will help YTLe deploy its network faster and will help to expedite affordable WiMAX services to both businesses and residential consumers. This he said will contribute to meeting the goal of the Malaysia government to reach fifty percent broadband penetration by 2010, and to deliver a “4G wireless broadband network to bring true mobility to the Malaysian consumer.”
