The Board of YTL e-Solutions Berhad (YTLE) is pleased to note today’s announcement from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission, on the successful award of a 2.3GHz broadband wireless access spectrum (WiMAX). This award marks a continuation in YTLE’s journey in the Technology, Media & Telecommunications space in Malaysia.
In 2000, through its 70% subsidiary, Extiva Communications Sdn. Bhd., YTLE pioneered the Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) industry in Malaysia. Today, Extiva Communications remains the 3rd largest VoIP service provider with over 3,500 corporate customers nationwide.
In 2002, YTLE’s subsidiary, YTL Info Screen Sdn Bhd, pioneered and went on to become the leading innovator within the narrowcast digital media sector in Malaysia, both as a network owner and operator, and as a developer of digital media solutions.
In 2005, through the listing of Infoscreen Networks PLC, YTLE became the first MESDAQ company to list a subsidiary on the AIM Market of the London Stock Exchange. Today, Infoscreen Networks PLC has a market capitalisation of RM75 million.
On 22nd December 2006, YTLE acquired a 50% stake in Bizsurf (M) Sdn. Bhd (Bizsurf). Bizsurf pioneered the provision of wireless Internet broadband services (WISP) in Malaysia in 2001. Today, Bizsurf is the largest WISP in the Klang Valley with more than 1,500 customers and provides broadband Internet connectivity to more than 300 buildings. With a coverage of more than 700 sq km. and with?this WiMAX spectrum award, Bizsurf is well positioned to penetrate the Internet broadband market very rapidly.
Tan Sri (Dr) Francis Yeoh Sock Ping, Executive Chairman and Managing Director of YTLE said, “I am very pleased and excited that YTLE through Bizsurf has won this important spectrum award. We look forward to bringing a new impetus and dimension to the Malaysian Telecommunications industry and the opportunity to offer all Malaysians a very high quality and affordable service, a philosophy which is very much a cause celebre of the YTL group. YTLE will also strive to drive broadband penetration in Malaysia thus helping to propel the future growth of the economy and meeting the government’s MyICMS 886 Strategy."
"I am also very excited about the possibilities for WiMAX not just in Malaysia but also right across Asia. WiMAX will revolutionise?communications in this country and in the region. For YTL, Malaysia is the first step in a region-wide approach."
"WiMAX is a new technology that will allow us to build the next generation of communication networks. It is designed from the outset to carry very-high speed data and will allow us to offer our customers a rich service bundle that will include fixed line voice calls, mobile voice calls, very high speed fixed and mobile internet access and video, music and other entertainment services."
“YTL is already actively engaged with the international WiMAX community. We are board members of The WiMAX Spectrum Owners Alliance (WiSOA), the world's only operator lead organisation that is focused on optimising WiMAX deployment worldwide. We expect that our Malaysian business will benefit greatly from the organisation as it gives us access to a large knowledge base with years of experience in building WiMAX networks. We plan to learn from what others have done, avoid their mistakes and bring the best possible technical and commercial solution to Malaysia."
“Via WiSOA we have already begun the process of evaluating possible vendors for our network equipment and are already engaged with a number of potential suppliers. We initiated this process some time ago to ensure that we are not delayed in the build-out process in case we succeed in getting a WIMAX licence.”
“We have signed WiSOA's international WiMAX roaming agreement. This is the world's first WiMAX global roaming agreement. Our customers here in Malaysia will soon be able to roam the globe and access the internet via our WiMAX and WiFi partners. Roaming will be as simple as it is now with a GSM phone. Switch on, log-on and off you go. Wherever you are in the world, you will use the Internet as you do at home and receive your bill at home in the usual way.”
“Once again I thank our Lord Jesus for blessing us with this important and valuable license and pray for His continual guidance. Most of all, we give Him all the glory.”
