Kuala Lumpur, 4 July 2003

KLSE Mesdaq-listed YTL e-Solutions Berhad (YTLE Mesdaq Stock Code: 0009) has invested into a Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) content provider called Hipmobile (M) Sdn Bhd. YTL e-Solutions executive chairman Tan Sri Francis Yeoh sealed the agreement with Hipmobile chief executive officer Fred Chong on 27 June 2003.

Hipmobile specialises in “wireless mobile entertainment” that combines information communications technology with entertainment, two areas in which Chong and chief operating officer Vance Ho respectively are experts.

Hipmobile has a revenue-generating contract with the region’s top two mobile service providers – StarHub and Maxis Communications (via their payment portal called WAP Portal Sdn Bhd) – to provide MMS content to their portals. StarHub is a Singapore-based info-communications company providing a full range of information, communications and entertainment services over fixed, mobile and Internet platforms. Maxis is the fastest growing mobile communications operator in Malaysia and is leading the industry with approximately 4 million subscribers. Hipmobile is prepared to scale greater heights through this partnership with YTL e-Solutions.
In the short time that Hipmobile has been in operations, it has proven to be among the top in what it does best. Hipmobile was named first-runner up in the Nokia Asia Polyphonic Ringtone competition. Organised by Nokia Asia Pacific, the competition had more than 100 entries from companies throughout the Asia Pacific region and was considered a good opportunity for ring tone producers to showcase their work using SP-Midi, the next-generation Nokia ring tone format.

Apart from creating polyphonic ringing tones, Hipmobile’s creations include other original multimedia content such as downloadable java-games, graphics and animations. Chong said the success and popularity of SMS is causing a new trend where users are willing to pay for such services. This has created a demand for not just static text messages, but also for unique icons, logos, picture messages, animated graphics and other audio-visual content.

In an impromptu demonstration, Chong and Ho showed how Hipmobile, in a collaboration with the Starhub portal allows users to download, among others, a polyphonic ringing tone to a mobile phone. The sample ringing tone that was downloaded even allowed the mobile phone to vibrate to the tone of the ringing – making it seem to dance to the tune.
