YTL Corp makes RM472.7 million (US$124.4 million) for half-year

YTL Corporation Berhad recorded revenue of RM2.0 billion (US$522.6 million) for the six months ended 31 December 2002, representing an increase of 57% as compared to the Group’s revenue of RM1.3 billion (US$342 million) for the six months ended 31 December 2001. Profit before taxation increased by 26% to RM472.7 million (US$124.4 million) in the current half-year from RM375.6 million (US$98.9 million) in the six months ended 31 December 2001.

The increases in both amounts are substantially attributable to the improved performance of YTL Power International Berhad.

YTL Power International Berhad registered an increase in turnover to RM1.6 billion (US$411.9 million) for the half-year ended 31 December 2002 from RM669.7 million (US$176.2 million) in the half-year ended 31 December 2001. This represents an increase in turnover of RM895.7 million (US$235.7 million) or 133.7%. Profit before taxation increased by 28.7% to RM395.2 million (US$104 million) in the six months ended 31 December 2002 as compared to the preceding year corresponding period. About 57% of the turnover is derived from overseas operations.

The increases in turnover and profit before tax are attributed substantially to the acquisition of the Wessex Water Group.

During the six months under review, YTL Cement Berhad continued to perform well, achieving revenue of RM190.7 million (US$50.2 million) and profit before taxation of RM36.4 million (US$9.6 million). These figures represent reductions of 8.6% in revenue and 13.0% in profit before taxation, as compared to the preceding year corresponding period, due to a decline in cement consumption in the construction industry during this period.

YTL Land & Development Berhad (formerly known as Taiping Consolidated Berhad) (“YTL L&D”) recorded revenue for the six months ended 31 December 2002 of RM0.44 million (US$0.12 million), and profit before tax of RM3.4 million (US$0.9 million).

YTL e-Solutions Berhad recorded revenue of RM12.0 million (US$3.2 million) for the six months ended 31 December 2002, representing an increase of 96% or RM6.0 million (US$1.6 million) over the previous year corresponding period ended. Profit before taxation for the current half-year increased by 195% to RM4.6 million (US$1.2 million).

The increases in revenue and profit before tax are attributable to the higher demand for communications technology, such as Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) telephony services provided by its subsidiary, Extiva Communications Sdn Bhd, as well as other IT consultancy services.

During the period under review, YTL e-Solutions Berhad acquired YTL Info Screen Sdn Bhd, which provides news, information and advertising content via cutting-edge digital technology such as plasma and liquid crystal display screens.
